Modern Cobbler is a passion project I began in the summer of 2023, when I took a class on how to construct shoes from scratch. I learned traditional techniques, such as skiving leather to thin it out, and lasting the shoe to attach the top to the sole, and applied this knowledge to create a contemporary sneaker modeled after the Nike Dunk.
My goal with the project was to make something unique to me and my experience, and in opposition to the mass-produced, unsustainable, fast fashion that surrounds us today. I want to embrace the original intention and ethos of streetwear culture: makeshift, customized, cobbled. My hope with this project is to inspire others to learn more about how their garments and accessories are made, and experiment with making themselves.
